Washing Machine Buying Guide: Capacity, Spin Speed & Energy Ratings Explained
A washing machine is one of the hardest-working appliances in any home. Picking the right one means cleaner clothes, lower bills, and fewer repair headaches. Here’s what actually matters.
1. Drum capacity (kg)
- 6–7kg: ideal for 1–2 people or small flats.
- 8–9kg: the sweet spot for most families of 3–4.
- 10kg+: large households, bedding, and bulky loads.
Tip: a fuller drum (with room for a hand on top) washes more efficiently than lots of small loads.
2. Spin speed (rpm)
Higher spin speeds remove more water, so clothes dry faster. 1400rpm is the practical sweet spot for most homes; 1600rpm helps if you tumble dry a lot, while delicate fabrics prefer lower speeds.
3. Energy & water efficiency
Check the UK energy label (A–G). An A-rated machine uses noticeably less electricity and water than a lower-rated one — over its lifetime, that can save you well over £100. Look at the litres-per-cycle figure too, not just the rating.
4. Programmes that earn their place
- Quick wash — 15–30 min refreshes for lightly worn clothes;
- Eco 40–60 — the standard cycle used for energy ratings, best for everyday loads;
- Anti-allergy / steam — useful for sensitive skin and babies;
- Delay timer — run cheaper off-peak electricity overnight.
5. Noise & build quality
For open-plan kitchens or flats, look for a wash noise under 50dB and a spin noise under 75dB. Inverter motors are quieter, more efficient, and usually come with longer warranties.
