Recycling old appliances (WEEE)
How to Recycle Your Old Appliance the Right Way (WEEE Explained)
Got a new fridge, washing machine, or oven on the way? Don’t send the old one to landfill. Here’s how appliance recycling works in the UK — and how we help.
What is WEEE?
WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. Under the UK’s WEEE Regulations, old appliances must be recycled properly because they contain materials — like the refrigerant gases in fridges — that are harmful if they leak into the environment.
Your options for getting rid of an old appliance
- Retailer take-back — many retailers (including us) will collect your old appliance when delivering the new one;
- Local council collection — most UK councils offer bulky-waste or white-goods collection for a small fee;
- Household recycling centre — your local tip accepts electricals free of charge;
- Charity reuse — if it still works, a charity may collect it for someone in need.
Before it’s collected
- Empty and defrost fridges/freezers, and let them dry out;
- Disconnect washing machines and drain any remaining water;
- Wipe the appliance down so it’s safe and clean to handle;
- Wipe any personal data from “smart” appliances if connected to Wi-Fi.
